Roman Kemp on his father’s two brain tumours – signs and symptoms of the condition

By | December 7, 2019

Roman Kemp, 26, is quickly becoming one of the hot favourites to win this year’s series of I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. The radio DJ is the son of actor and musician Martin Kemp who gained notoriety as a member of the band Spandau Ballet which shot to fame in the 80s. Roman recalled to fellow campmates about his dad’s health battle and how he had to ‘relearn’ his music.

Martin had suffered from two brain tumours back in 1995. Appearing on Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, Martin revealed that it was his wife Shirlie who first discovered a little lump in his head.

Martin explained: “It was the strangest thing because you could feel it and it wasn’t soft like a tumour should be, this was like a hard piece of scalp.

If they’d never found this one growing out, they wouldn’t have found the one in the middle until it was too late and that was the one that would have killed me.”

What are the symptoms of a brain tumour

Cancer.Net said: “People with a brain tumour may experience the following symptoms or signs. Sometimes, people with a brain tumour do not have any of these changes.

“Or, the cause of a symptom may be a different medical condition that is not a brain tumour. Symptoms of a brain tumour can be general or specific.

“A general symptom is caused by the pressure of the tumour on the brain or spinal cord. Specific symptoms are caused when a specific part of the brain is not working well because of the tumour.

“For many people with a brain tumour, they were diagnosed when they went to the doctor after experiencing a problem, such as a headache or other changes.”

Martin underwent a critical eight-hour operation and had to remain in hospital for several weeks afterwards.

Following the surgery, he had a metal plate implanted over his brain under the scalp.

Roman said it was during this difficult time for the family, that the father and son became “super close”.

Roman said: “How can my dad not be my hero through all of that. We’re a proper unit. My dad is my best mate. 100 percent. I speak to him every day.”
